Yume’s War on Food Waste featuring Sodexo

Yume’s War on Food Waste featuring Sodexo

We have to change so it’s not really an
option we can’t keep going the way we are. Every time we put food in landfill
we create methane which is you know 25 times more deadly than the fumes coming
out of your exhaust pipes. We can’t sustain ourselves if we keep pulling
food out the way we are and then just burying it in landfill. I’m Katy Barfield I’m the founder of Yume
and Yume is an online marketplace for the sale of surplus food so we deal at
commercial levels we’re a B2B platform and we move substantial quantities of food
from suppliers through to buyers like Sodexo. Sodexo is a trusted provider of
facility management services. We have had a desire to reduce waste and be more
environmentally sustainable as we deliver our services as part of our
Better Tomorrow plan. We started operating with Yume in May of this year
and up to this point we have nearly used 10 tonnes of food from Yume that would
otherwise have ended up as waste they’ve purchased feta cheese it’s locally
produced and also Australian crushed tomatoes
and when we look at the kind of impact that that has on the environment it
might not sound so much 10,000 kilograms but that’s 20 tons of co2 that has not
been released into the atmosphere or 600,000 litres of embodied water that
hasn’t gone to waste. Food is surplus for a variety of reasons it can be a
cancelled order but the most important thing is this is all top-quality surplus
food I’m talking about salmon I’m talking about fresh lobster we’ve had 27
tonne of yellowfin tuna that was cancelled by a retailer at the very last
moment so there’s no reason why this food should not be eaten. It’s critical
that corporates step up because we are creating this problem we are producing
food that is going to waste it is very uneconomical and we’re destroying the planet –
we all need to get on board. If you’re a food business that can buy food or if you’re
a supplier or a farmer that has surplus food, if you’ve been put in a situation
where you’ve got a cancelled order or there’s some amazing food that’s got a
slight damage to the packaging but the food is perfectly healthy and safe to
eat and good quality then get in contact with us
because we do have a solution for your problem and we’re one of only
three globally that’s tackling this problem so the more people that jump on
board the more momentum we’re going to get and the more change we’re going to
create.
