You Suck At Meal Prep Because Meal Prep Sucks (And Other Food Tips) | #SmackYoLip

– This is cute! It’s good. Can I just say, it is so hard being a stay at home adult. Like I be tryna find my community, and I been trying to join the mommy groups but they all say I gotta have children? And I feel like that’s a little
bit on the prejudice side, that’s a little prejudice. I’ma take a bite. It’s not my fault that you not gonna have leftovers, Susan. ‘Cause you got a full house. Just don’t put that on me. Hey YouTube world, it’s me, Evelyn. Welcome to #SmackYoLip. The series I do on here where I taste and or prepare beverages and or foodstuffs and share my thoughts on them. Today’s installment of #SmackYoLip is gonna be a little different. In this video I’m going
to combine my love of food with my ever-growing quest
to understand adulting. Which really is my quest
to find out where I can get myself some grace. ‘Cause life is hard. Life can get hard. (crying) This really good. Over on this channel, we
believe in eating our feelings. Okay? (laughs) So in general we tend to think of adulting in terms of task completion. Be productive at work,
doing your chores on a daily, weekly, monthly,
and quarterly schedule. Decluttering, Marie Kondo. Having a morning routine that makes you rejuvenated and ready to go. And of course, meal prepping. And believe you me, I’ve tried it. I have tried the whole meal prepping thing where you cook a bunch of dishes, you portion control in
some sorry Tupperware. Okay, you got a drizzle of rice, you got five grains of
rice, a chicken breast, and three asparaguses. And then you eat that for all of eternity until you get fed up and
eventually find yourself at midnight in the Whattaburger drive-thru because you know you got rice at home but you don’t want rice. I don’t think food should be
that regimented for everyone. I’m not a bodybuilder,
I’m not even an athlete. Leisurely, I barely go outside. The reason you suck at meal prep is because meal prep sucks. So I’ve got a handful of
tips and tricks and hacks and experiences and lessons
learned along the way when it comes to me
trying to nourish myself. Number one, and this is
the biggest tip, hack, whatever you want to call it, prep ingredients, not meals. Because for me, cooking
doesn’t take a long time, it’s the preparation to cook. It’s chopping the onions and the garlic and marinating whatever you gotta marinate and the chopping and the
peeling and it’s so much. Who wants to reheat salmon? Think about it! Now I love leftovers just
as much as the next person but, there’s some things I won’t do. So prep ingredients, chop your veggies, peel your sweet potato and chop it up or whatever you be doin’. Make your homemade dips and dressings and hummus and what have you. When you prepare all the
components of your dish, that also allows for more
flexibility and spontaneity, you know what I’m saying. You don’t wanna be stuck
with a chicken breast if you don’t want the breast. I guarantee if you just do this one tip you’ll drastically reduce your food waste. You can only reheat things so many times after so many days. Why, why try? Meal prep tip number two, and this really depends on your mobility, your level of access to a vehicle, okay, transportation if you
will, so I understand that. But, second tip, go back to the store instead of stockpiling food. So when I was a teen, I used
to cook dinner for my family ’cause my mom worked… I was the one in charge of dinner. I took that method of cooking
and applied it to my own life when I moved out and was
cooking for just myself. I had so much pasketti, I mean, I can’t. I would make red beans and
rice for the apocalypse. I went from cooking
for four people to one, but my grocery shopping
list stayed the same. Doesn’t compute. That has been probably the
toughest habit to break, even now I’ll go to the grocery store and I’ll feel this sense of
“what if I don’t have enough?” In other countries, you
know when I went and visited my family in the motherland, or even I’ve heard
people in France do this, at the end of every work
day they go to the market and get that night’s dinner. Not everybody in the world
stockpiles Costco food. Why do you need a thousand shrimps? For me it’s also taken a
little bit of the stress, it’s not like really stress, but it’s taken a little
bit of the stress away from planning a week’s worth of meals, and it’s like, no, I have
to feed myself til Wednesday and then Wednesday we’ll reassess,
we’ll see where we’re at. Maybe I don’t wanna eat at home, huh? Maybe I wanna socialize. Number three, which is more of a lesson or a thing I’ve come to know
over time, is experiment. And for me that’s where
Hello Fresh comes in, shout out to them for sponsoring the kid. Hello Fresh is home cooking,
but make it actually easy. I mean I can cook, I can cook. But, even if I couldn’t, it comes with easy-to-follow instructions, it comes with pre-measured ingredients, the whole process is simple
enough for you to prep, cook, and get a meal on the table
in about thirty minutes. No Rachael Ray. (relaxing music) (sizzling) This is cute! Oh my god! I’m not gonna lie, this smell hella good. It smell hella hella good. Mhmm! That’s nice! Uh-huh. (laughs) Yes, okay! Mmm. This doin’ somethin’. Whoa! Come through, sesame oil! It’s giving me Austin, Texas low-key. It’s giving me hipster,
Korean taco truck fusion. They made us make pickles. I’ve never had a radish before. I don’t think. They good! You know, me myself, I like condiments. So anytime something says a drizzle, that’s my cue to pour it on. Tortilla, okay? You got the Korean-spiced beef, you got the pickles we made, the cilantro, some Sriracha, the crema, hey! Hold on. It’s giving me bibimbap (laughs). It’s giving me quick and easy, okay! This just like came together, filming is another story, but for you, this is gonna come together. Real fast, gonna come together real fast. I decided to use Hello Fresh
as a way to experiment, I’m not a particularly picky eater, but I do get in food ruts,
you know what I’m saying? I be eating the same paskettis. So you can use it that way as a way to try different flavors
and regions of cuisine without the risk of it turning out bad. And like a whole pot
of some curry situation with way too much turmeric. Turmeric and curry powder
kinda look the same, you got confused, who gonna eat all this? Aint enough naan in the
world to soak it up. And as far as meal kit
delivery services go, I know some of y’all watching are like, “What’s this hippy-dippy
hippy-dippy lifestyle? “Back in my day, I used to walk
ten miles to borrow sugar.” Hello Fresh is really flexible, you can add meals to your weekly order, you can change the
delivery days if you know you’ll be out of town or something, and you can skip a week. You can skip it! Hello Fresh is now from $5.66 per serving, get started with eight free meals, that’s $80 off your first
month of Hello Fresh. So go to HelloFresh.com, link is in the video description box, click the one that’s in
the video description box, and use Promo Code
evelynfromtheinternets80. Next tip, some people need to experiment, and then some people need
to develop their go-tos. For me, when in doubt, tacos. You can put anything on a tortilla, and it’ll sustain you. If you gonna be out here in the world, okay, thriving, you have to find a couple dishes that you like making for yourself. Doesn’t have to be anything intricate, you don’t need to get
your Food Network on, but really take the time to
think about what your version of what fast food can be. Figuring out what your fast food is makes it a lot easier for you to decide to make that ten minute grocery store run, instead of going to the drive-thru, Whattaburger drive-thru at midnight, okay? ‘Cause you’re like whatever,
life is but a vapor. For some people, that’s spaghetti,
when in doubt, spaghetti! For some people, their fast
food is whipping up minute rice and some steamed broccoli. Do what you can. My last tip for meal prepping, adulting, trying to do the best you can, is that life happens. I have some months where
I’m whipping it up. I’m on my Giada De Laurentiis,
I’m on my Emeril Lagasse, I’m on my Top Chef, you feel me? And some months, I feed
myself day-by-day with maybe, day-by-day maybe. The biggest thing I’ve learned,
and I’m continuing to learn, is that’s okay. We’re all out here trying
to be as productive as people we see who have
staff, do you feel me? Remember, the game is rigged. Food security and access. How sometimes I feel like
I have to choose between food that’s good to the Earth, food that’s good to the
humans who grew it or made it, and food that’s good to my bank account. But I can’t have all three,
you know what I’m sayin? I feel like the game is rigged, okay? I do not have a avocado tree like Oprah, but I wish I did, if I did, I would share! I really would! You can all come over and have guacamole. Follow me, listen to me, see me, feel me. You cannot be perfect, but
you can always learn more. And that’s it for this
edition of #SmackYoLip. Hope it was informative,
hope you learned something, hope you will visit HelloFresh.com and use Promo Code
evelynfromtheinternets80, hope! A girl can hope! Go forth and be full, how ’bout that? Hm? How ’bout you go be full. In the comments below, let me know if I came to
your house for dinner, what we having? I’ll see you on the internet somewhere. Bye! (relaxing music)

  1. TELL ME: if i came to your house for dinner, what we having?!?!?! (no you're not imagining it, yes this was reuploaded)

  2. As a college student, this video was too relatable. This past week, I ate spaghetti 3 times for lunch and I don't wanna see another noodle for at least the next 2 weeks, lol. My sister and I are extra, so we always go into the city to shop at TJ's for our groceries. We look like whole bag ladies on the metro trying to stock up on all the frozen veggies, dumplings, and snacks we can carry. That tip about preparing components and not meals was so true because 90% of the meals I make start with me frying onions, peppers, and tomatoes. Cutting up all those veggies is probably the most time consuming part of the whole process.

  3. Somehow this video knew that I had been eating out for almost 2 weeks straight and I needed to start cooking again. Will definitely use the hello fresh code.

  4. Right now if you came over, we finishing off the taco meat in the fridge. Freshly fried taco shells! Banana pudding for dessert.

  5. When in doubt 'with uninvited famo' jackets and some cooked down vegetables or fish. Just me and mine pizza whichever way I choose…except pineapple and cheese.

  6. I love this….I love you Evelyn!! meal prep doesnt work when there is 4 adults (1 woman, 3 dudes) living in a house. Our fridge is Gatorade and hotdogs (i hide mac and cheese bowls in my closet)

  7. Baby J is available for all Susan and Mom group outings. I think yall would make a perfect mommy son duo. You know what… let me gone pack his overnight bag.

  8. Loved all of this. 'Why you need 1,000 shrimp!?' had my laughing. If you came to dinner I would cook slow roasted pork belly ramen. I feel like a broth wizard when I make it.

  9. I dont understand how anyone can down vote your videos. I was first introduced to you from Say It Loud and once I found out you had your own channel Ive been HOOKED and cracking up ever since You are a joy to watch. And your spirit and messages are REAL

  10. Doing groceries day by day can be more expensive then planning for a week or even more .For me at least i will not buy just what i need for that one dinner but ill think for something to eat in the morning as well or i see something appealing since i am in the store daily ill get it and tomorrow ill see something else ill want just in case. Budget wise is painful. I would spend minimum 20 euros daily while if i would do weekly groceries i would go for about 80 or 100. However if i would go for weekly supplies i would still go to the store daily for bread or think of a missing ingredient or just think of a different dish i didn't think about while doing the weekly groceries….

  11. Great tips. If you came to my house for dinner, you would have whatever I had for dinner the night before. I'm the cook on Sunday and warm it up until I can't stand it anymore and put the leftovers in the freezer. I wish I had the will to go to the store daily, but that's too much for me.

  12. Man this was such a good video Evelyn!! !'ma figure out what's MY fast food because I be in all the drive thrus spending $ I don't have after teaching 572,243 fitness classes at work… for dinner I would make us some Chipotle chicken enchilada souptaste like everything in chicken enchiladas with black beans and that roasted corn from Trader Joe's 休

  13. If you were dining at my casa today the Menu is Tumeric infused rice, Tin Mackerel with loads of onions and pepper, fried ripe plantain and several slices of Avocado. We be eating good today girl

  14. Less than a minute in and I'm DYING!! Never actually planned to try HelloFresh but now?! Messing with Cousin Evelyn, I think I will.

  15. I'm about to go crazy with the homemade (from scratch) pizza on you if you're coming over! you know i'm not letting you leave with at least half a pizza of leftovers!!

  16. Evelyn youre my spirit animal! I need need NEEDED this. This is the number one thing I have struggled with as an adult. (Im 26, weve been struggling for YEARS) Bless you! Thank the Lord for you!

  17. Honestly I may try hello fresh now. This is the best hello fresh commercial I've seen. You're so real and it hit home for me

  18. I mean, am I trying to impress you or treat you like family? Because it might change based on your answer…
Impress: pot roast with roasted carrots, onion, and celery over mashed potatoes
Family: either chili with cornbread, or chicken pot pie.

So, when you coming over? Austin is only a quick 8 hour drive away

  19. yes to acknowledging systemic barriers to eating good and balancing your time! time is a commodity in the world of capitalism.

  20. meal prep is so gross lol. i actually enjoy left overs but they're only viable for like 3 days MAX!!!! who's trying to eat food they made a WEEK AGO?? food poisoning!

  21. Im supposed to be cooking for 2 people, but I cook for 6 to 8 lol. However, I have 2 deep freezers and a food saver. Problem solved. Pro tip, cook once, freeze, and eat several times.

  22. Also if you came to my house to have dinner, Im making curry chickpeas with rice. It gets me through the hardest of times and I still feel bougie

  23. Omg I love and live for this…. I am a nursing student, and I do not have time to make and meal prep like I used to. Also, my boyfriend has tried, and will not eat the same thing for more than two to three days…. I like the first tip especially prep ingredients not meals…. I have a recipe binder in the kitchen of recipes that have been tried out, and WORKED OUT…. (pintrest will have you upset at times) and Ill put Fast Food Din Din on the front page for when we don't feel like making anything…. This video helped so much

  24. Girl, if you're coming over, I'm making either a Lemon Garlic Herb stewed chicken, with a spicy roasted broccoli and sweet potato compote or a Jamaican jerk seasoned salmon with lemon paired with a red bean salad and mixed vegetables. Come over!!! It sounds bougie ya'll but I promise it doesn't take long for all this goodness. It's flavor packed, veggie accompanied, and without processed carbs. Love yourself.

I also relate to the struggle. I DO NOT eat like this all the time. Even if I have the ingredients and it doesn't take long, I do not always have the TIME! Sometimes a premixed salad, a 15 min marinated pan seared chicken breast and a herb vinaigrette is gonna have to do fam! I love you cousin Evelyn and I support as many of your work as I can until I am back stateside and hopefully buying a house in Texas! Whoop! Family Reunions?? #SYOTIS

  25. Lol!!!! "It is sooo hard being a stay at home adult." Lol!!! For me it is so hard being an adult period!!! You have to actually wake up on time to go to work and be there on time to talk to ignorant patients over the phone! They are rude and disrespectful and I don't get paid enough to help them!

  26. This is what I needed! I've been struggling with feeding my self something other than chicken, shrimp and knorr pasta sides I've just been giving up and eating out but that's hurting my bank account.

  27. I adore you SO much!! I havent laughed in a week and this was JUST what I needed. Thank YOU. Keep shining queen!. If u came o my house… we having brown stew chicken… Im Jamaican 荊 thats my go-to 仄撾儭不不

  28. I'm a stay at home adult too, it's a great life, but I need adult interaction every once in a while. So I joined the mommy group here in my city. I lied and said I'm trying to get pregnant. They welcomed me with open arms and I show up and hang out like I'm really trying to be a mom, but I'm really just there for the mimosas and conversations. DONT JUDGE ME, yall don't know my life!拎

  29. nah lol
Meal-prep is for people who either have a lot of mouths to feed, or go to work during the day. Cooking does take time if you have deadlines to meet, and aren't a stay-at-home adult lol. Ideally, it would be great to be able to just have ingredients prepped for when you want to cook, but it's not like you can cook everything you want in the office, not even fish, because it stinks up the entire place. You can at-best reheat food, or toast bread if you're lucky. yeah meal-prepping sucks, but it's definitely a necessity if one is trying to save time and money.

  30. Figuring my version of fast food!? Wtf this the most helpful mf video … Im not gonna lie Im shocked asf. Lemme put this in my favorites.

  31. They all say I gotta have children
    *fake vomits *
Isn't that a little but on the prejudiced side?

Lol why are you my queen!!
