From violence to good: Former Ms. Choc’s Lounge transforms into community center


I’ve new this morning a first-of-its-kind community center will officially open on Melrose Avenue it’s a partnership between feeding America Southwest Virginia the role of Police Department Goodwill Industries and Food Lion 10 News reporter erin Brookshire joins us live from the community center Erin this is a major change from what used to be at that site yeah definitely is this is a building that’s been everything from bars and restaurants to late-night lounges but today the building behind me will reopen as the community Solutions Center a site for community programs a training kitchen and a location where kids in need can come for a healthy meal today’s grand opening comes nearly two years after a 3:00 a.m. shooting in this building left four people hurt back in June 2016 the incident led to a prayer circle just days later where community leaders including police captain Rick Morrison prayed for this location to be transformed it was a meeting that sparked the idea for a space that less than two years later has become a reality in the space where a stage used to be stands a brand new kitchen there’s a meeting room where lawmakers can host events and get feedback from community members and a small room where people can meet with police officers chief Tim Jones says he’s excited to see a location where officers have historically responded to late night and early morning incidents now turned into a space where they can work with community members and get to know them in a positive environment will act be actively engaged here in positive outcomes and that’s a win-win the community wins the city wins everybody comes away with something good coming out of this facility years ago this location was home to lolz Restaurant & Lounge a place many people on the neighborhood say they have fond memories of and it’s a fond feeling that those behind this community solutions center are hoping to bring back by reopening this as a sinner that can help and support people here in the Melrose neighborhood live in Roanoke I’m Erin Brookshire 10 News working for you
